Recycling for Charities

When I moved in with Tom, I purged about 20 years worth of stuff from my home.  I actually took very little with me.  One thing I found myself wondering was what to do with old electronics.

A local company, Recycling for Charities, collects old e-waste.  They don't charge you to take it off your hands...they actually give you a receipt for a tax donation.

With the money they raise through their recycling efforts, they have supported over 800 charities.  At the same time, they have kept over 2 tons of waste out of landfills.

Why not drop your unwated electronics here?

Don't Fill Out the Change of Address Cards at the Post Office When You Move!!!

Oh my gosh, I got married last May.  I did what I thought I was supposed to do to change my address.  I filled out a Change of Address form provided by the post office.

Big mistake!!!  The Post Office sells your information!!!

So here is what happened next.  Six months go by.  Now it's the holiday season.  Now I get six new catalogs in the mail every single day that I did not ask for and I do not want.  Like all of us, I am trying to lower my carbon footprint.  I am also on a mission to simplify my life and my stuff, and the last thing I want is to spend money on "more stuff"...

If you feel the same way I do, here is what you can do instead.  Change your address with folks directly:

Every bill you get in the mail has the option right on the back of the statement or they have an 800 number for you to call. All of your other professional accounts can be changed the same way.  Yes, it takes more time....

Send friends and family notices of your new address through a nice little card or an email.  You can also put a notice in your thank you notes after the wedding.

I also strongly suggest you support a local company called 41pounds.org.  For 41 dollars, they will stop most of your junk mail and credit card offers for 5 year.  For most people, this saves 41 pounds of paper each and every year.  One half of your fee goes to a charity of your choice.  Yes, you can do this yourself for free.  But that takes time too...and your donation supports both a charitable organization as well as the local economy.
