At a recent wedding I had the pleasure of officiating, one of the groomsmen also happened to be a professional photographer. Following the ceremony, he approached me and said:
"I have been to a hundred weddings. I have never seen anyone do what you just did. You spoke to the bride and groom so personally, like you had been friends with them for years... I have never seen anybody actually 'minister' like that in a wedding before..."
At A Joyful Celebration! We probably don't mean "Ministry" as you might think of the word. And when I call myself "Rev. Sherry," I have my own ideas about that too.
Our definition of Ministry is this:
1. An act or instance of ministering; ministration; service.
2. Something that serves as an agency, instrument, or means.
I do not feel it is my job to preach to you about my own beliefs. I act more as a student than as a teacher. I feel it is my job to learn about your beliefs, and about what feeds your soul.
Then it is my job to incorporate your own standards and concepts of "God" or "Good" into the ceremony in a way that suits you. Some people believe in a God of their formal religion. Some people believe in nature. Some people believe in humanity and in life. Some people believe in good cake...
To me, "Ministry" means to be of service.
